      The modern drift started at the All Japan Touring Car Championship Races 30 years ago.      The Japanese rider, Kunimitsu Takahashi, was the creator of the technique in 1970. O DRIFT moderno teve início no “All Japan Touring Car Championship races” há 45 anos atrás.  O legendário piloto Kunimitsu Takahashi foi o criador da técnica em 1970.  Ele ficou famoso batendo seu “apex” (o ponto onde o carro esta mais perto da curva) em alta velocidade e derrapando na curva, saindo da curva com mais velocidade que o normal. Depois dessa façanha ele ganhou uma legião de fãs que deram início ao drift japonês. Para fazer  drift  é necessário ter um carro de tração traseira . O suposto "drift" com carros de tração dianteira é na verdade conhecido como power slide.
